At the CEO Summit in Mumbai, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer revealed that nine UK universities will open campuses in India, aiming to strengthen academic ties, promote research collaboration and increase access to foreign education domestically. The initiative aligns with India’s National Education Policy 2020 and envisions deepening academia-industry partnerships.

  • The University of Southampton has already launched its Gurugram campus and admitted its first batch of students.
  • The University of Bristol has secured UGC approval to launch an “Enterprise Campus” in Mumbai, slated to admit students by summer 2026.
  • University of Liverpool plans to open in Bangalore
  • University of York and University of Aberdeen in Mumbai.
  • The University of Surrey will start in GIFT City, Gujarat, offering programs in AI, finance and cybersecurity in 2026–27.
  • Newcastle University is considering opening a campus in India and has announced scholarship support for Indian students.

Strategic Collaboration & Infrastructure

As part of the agreement, leaders also announced the establishment of an Industry Guild and Supply Chain Observatory focused on critical minerals, with a satellite campus at ISM Dhanbad. This move is expected to not only bring global higher education to Indian soil but also drive research, innovation and economic development through international cooperation.
