Australia Student Visa Changes: At a Glance
Effective Date: New regulations came into effect on 2 October 2026.
Onshore Applications: Most temporary visa holders can no longer apply for a Student visa while in Australia.
Family Inclusion: Restrictions now apply to including spouses and dependent children in Student visa applications.
Exemptions: Certain doctoral students, government-sponsored students and eligible Pacific and ASEAN nationals are exempt.
Existing Visas: Current Student visas remain valid and are not affected by these changes.
Offshore Applications: Eligible applicants can still apply for a Student visa from outside Australia.
Australia has introduced new Student visa regulations that affect international students applying for a Student visa (subclass 500) or Student Guardian visa (subclass 590) while in Australia, as well as students planning to bring family members.
Effective 2 October 2026, most Student visa holders can no longer apply for a further Student visa from within Australia unless they meet specific exemption criteria. Many temporary visa holders, including Working Holiday visa holders and Temporary Graduate visa holders, are also restricted from applying for a Student visa onshore.
The changes also limit the ability of Student visa applicants to include their partners and dependent children in their applications. Exemptions apply to certain categories, including doctoral students, eligible Pacific and ASEAN nationals, government-sponsored students and recipients of qualifying foreign government scholarships.
1. Restrictions on Onshore Applications
Most Student visa applications must now be lodged from outside Australia unless the applicant qualifies for an exemption. Applicants who must apply offshore must also be outside Australia when their visa is granted.
2. Tighter Rules for Bringing Family Members
Most applicants can no longer include their partners or dependent children in a Student visa application unless an exemption applies. Family members cannot be added after a Student visa has been granted. Limited arrangements are available for certain existing families.
3. Existing Student Visas Remain Valid
The new rules do not affect current Student visas. Applications lodged before 2 October 2026 will continue to be assessed under the rules that applied when they were submitted.
4. Students Planning to Change Education Providers
Students considering changing their education provider should monitor official announcements, as the Australian Government is developing a proposed Transfer stream within the Student visa subclass.
Students planning to study in Australia should review the latest visa requirements before making decisions about enrolment, travel, relocation or family arrangements. Those who may be affected should check their eligibility and seek advice from a registered migration agent where necessary.
These reforms aim to strengthen the integrity of Australia's international education system while maintaining opportunities for genuine international students to pursue their studies.
